1. Bought through C. T. Loo and Company, New York, from Chang Nai chi [Zhang Naiji] 張乃驥. For price, see Freer Gallery of Art Purchase List After 1920.
2. (John Ellerton Lodge, 1939) See Folder F1939.6, Paragraph 2.
3. (Undated Folder Sheet note) This is a reproduction in little of the same type of ko [ge] 戈 as our much earlier F1917.396. As far as the form of the blade goes, the hole in the tang may be said to be functional; but it seems quite possible that miniatures of this sort were made only for burial with the dead. See folder F1917.396, Paragraph 2, and F1919.17 and F1919.61.
4. (Undated Folder Sheet note) Sp. G. is 2.946. Decomposition prevents an accurate calculation for nephrite.
5. (Thomas Lawton, 1978) Attribution changed from "Chou [Zhou] 周 dynasty, late" to "Late Shang 商."
6. (Julia K. Murray, 1980) Attribution changed from "Late Shang 商" to "Early Western Chou [Zhou] 周, ca. 10th century BCE." Exhibition Ancient Chinese Jade label text; moved to label field.
7. (Julia K. Murray, 1982) For a general discussion of jade ko [ge] 戈, see Folder Sheet F1917.396. Compared to ko [ge] 戈 blades excavated from Shang 商 sites, the ko [ge] 戈 F1939.21 is longer, narrower, and straighter in shape and farther removed from the bronze weapon prototype that inspired the evolution of the jade ko [ge] 戈. Therefore, it is provisionally reattributed to the Western Chou [Zhou] 周 period. An unusual feature is that one side of the butt edge is beveled instead of being cut straight.
8. (Stephen Allee as per Keith Wilson, June 16, 2008) As per Jenny F. So, Jade Project Database, changed Date from "ca. 10th century BCE" to "ca. 1050--771 BCE."
