Essays

This selection of articles translated from Korean into English presents informative research on ceramics by Korean scholars. The articles center on topics relating to ceramics of the Goryeo period (918–1392). Several examine well-known formats of decoration—the origins of the celebrated Goryeo technique of ceramic inlay (and the closely related form of lacquer inlay) as well as the technique’s late phase, and the development of underglaze iron-painted decoration. One essay considers the role of geography and access to water transport in the development of the Goryeo ceramic industry.
