Stamp seals of this type were found at various sites, including Tepe Giyan and Tepe Sialk in Iran. They were commonly produced during this period in Iran and in northern Mesopotamia. This rounded stamp seal is pierced on the back and depicts a coiled snake, the head of which is rendered in a triangular form. The body of the snake runs on one side of the seal and occupies the space behind a horned quadruped. The identification of the animal figure as a caprid can be made because of its horns, similar to those of a ram. The empty spaces of the stamp seal are occupied with drilled holes and boomerang shaped motifs. These types of seals and motifs are typically found in Iran. More specifically, the shape of the snake is found on seals of Tepe Giyan and Susa. In Susa, there are examples of seals with mouflons with painted brown spots, generally attributed to 4000 BCE. Other examples of snake motifs, attributed to the third millennium BCE, were found in Uruk, Iraq on stamp seals with drilled holes applied to the foreground and on the body of the animal.
