Charles Lang Freer (1854-1919)

Description: Ceremonial implement; blade with one side beveled and slightly concave; upper end slightly concave; irregular longitudinal ridge; prominent lateral projection on each side above perforated tang; black with brownish translucence at upper end; some cream-colored markings on reverse. (Slightly chipped.)

Acquired with a box, now lost.

7. (Julia K. Murray, 1982) (Added chang [zhang] 璋 above ceremonial implement.) Chang [Zhang] 璋 F1916.164 is a thin version of the typical chang [zhang] 璋 (see Folder Sheet F1916.492 for discussion). The tang shows a clear slice mark, and the crescentic points of the sharpened top have broken off.

One face concave with irregular longitudinal ridge. Blunted asymmetrical tips (damaged and reground?). Single blunt notch at base of blade just before rectangular perforated tang. Almost straight (conical?) hole. Slice mark?
