A former gallery manager of Goupil & Cie, William Stephen Marchant (1868–1925) joined the London branch of the firm, known as the Goupil Gallery, in 1890. The Goupil Gallery held exhibitions of both French and British art, and represented individual artists including Whistler. Marchant became the gallery manager in 1898, and several years later founded his own gallery, William Marchant & Co., in London while acting as an agent for Goupil.
