Francis Seymour Haden was a prominent surgeon and amateur etcher. He was Whistler's brother-in-law and became an important mentor. Whistler often stayed with Haden while visiting London in 1848, and it was then that Whistler attended lectures by artist Charles Robert Leslie and discovered works by Turner. Haden encouraged Whistler to work from nature and, as a result, Whistler dedicated his first set of etchings, French Set, to Haden. Whistler executed various domestic etchings and paintings within Haden's home. Haden's old master prints and knowledge of photography served as a great influence to Whistler's artistic career. After an argument in 1867, Haden and Whistler never spoke again and Whistler was expelled from the Burlington Club as a result of Haden's complaints.
