John James Cowan, a paper manufacturer from Edinburgh, was an avid collector and patron to Whistler. Between 1893 and 1900, Cowan sat for his portrait painted by Whistler over sixty times. However, Whistler completed only the head and did not allow Cowan to have the unfinished portrait.
