Bottle with two vertical ring handles

Bottle of ovoid form with angular shoulder, cup shaped mouth, splayed foot and recessed base. Two ring handles on shoulder.
Clay: brown stoneware with black inclusions.
Glaze: dark brown, translucent to opaque, glossy, crazed; falls short of lower body, foot, base and interior unglazed.
Decoration: incised bands on upper body.

Curatorial Remarks

  • 1. (Candy Chan,  Research Assistant, May 19, 2003) Sisatchanalai brown glazed eared bottle of  this type were found in the Ko Kradat shipwreck. It is a mid-16th century  shipwreck with reference to a blue and white porcelain base shard bearing 'Da  Ming Jiajing nianzhi' [made during the reign of Jiajing (1522–1566) in the  Great Ming Dynasty] and another shard with a Wanli reign mark (1573–1619);  (Green and Harper 1987, 9, fig. 6).


    Similar brown glazed eared bottles but with splayed mouths  were found on the Turiang shipwreck (+/- 1370 AD). Brown belives that they are  among the early wares made at the Sisatchanalai kilns (Brown and Sjostrand  2001, 43–45, color pl. 16).
